PS3 YLOD Repair and Thermal Paste Change

Today we had a 60GB Backwards Compatible PS3 with the YLOD,after accessing the Syscon error log we found that it had the 3013 error which pinpoints a short and a blown fuse (F6302) on the “misc” power rails.

PS3 Syscon error logging

After replacing 2 x SMD MLCC and the fuse on that power rail the console booted briefly and shut down again. As you can see in the log a new error showed (1601/1701). This pinpoints the NEC Tokin capacitors on the CELL have failed.

Faulty capacitors causing the YLOD

We then replaced the NEC Tokin capacitors with tantalum caps and the console is now in operational order.

While we had it dismantled we gave it a full service and delidded the RSX and CELL to replace the thermal compound to keep it quiet and in tip top operating condition.

New thermal compound applied to the die of each chip
New thermal compound applied to the heatsink

All in all another successful repair to a beloved 60GB Backwards Compatible PS3

  1. Hi again, as life would have it I came across 2 units with this exact 3013 with repeated 2120 error. Changed the caps and fuse and still the same error on both. Any suggestions would be appreciated if you don’t mind too much.

  2. did not actually test fuse before removal. just went by the error. the replacement fuse on there tested .0002 on diode mode and continuity beeps. I cannot really tell if there’s a short on the rail because these boards everything seems to be giving a short due to the low impedance. This is the third different RSX and they all had the same error 3013/followed many 2120’s same as your image without the 1601 and 1701. If you remove the RSX and try to boot it the syscon will deliver A0231002, A0A02031. I’ve never seen that version of ‘1002’ before usually you’ll get 3034/2030/4402 sometimes 2031 etc when a chip is removed. I’m baffled

  3. The fuse checks out and the two new caps are not short to ground from the positive side and reading 1.6v and the 3 mosfets are reading 1.6 > 1.2v
