Today I had a customers beloved PS3 slim come in with the YLOD. First thing to do was read the Syscon error log and find a point in the right direction for a repair.
The error log was showing me a VDDC error and points towards the NEC-Tokin capacitors feeding the RSX are faulty.
The majority of the time these are the faulty components causing the YLOD when these errors are displayed in the log. Next step is to go ahead and prepare the board for swapping out the caps with Tantalum capacitors.
This process is done with a hot air wand.
I also went ahead and de-lidded the RSX to replace the thermal paste between the die and IHS.
The thermal paste also gets replaced above the IHS(integrated heat spreader) to ensure cool and quiet operation of the unit.
Time to reassemble and test the console.
Once again another successful repair snd one very happy customer
