With all of the great work from m4j0r over at psx-place I managed to do the RSX swap/hack/mod on a backwards compatible PS3.
To start I removed the required resistors and grounded the other for the mod to work
After the few minor resistors were sorted I removed the old 90nm RSX and prepped the board ready for the new 65nm RSX
I then installed/flowed the new RSX to the board
Then I had to patch the Syscon to see and use the new RSX
Once that was all completed I could fire up the console.
Job done and one very neat hack for the old backwards compatible PS3 to ensure it has a long and lasting existence.
The main advantage of being able to carry out this mod is in aid of longevity of these loved and well sought after backwards compatible PS3’s. The other benefit is a more reliable and cooler running RSX.
Now to swap a 90nm RSX with a 40nm RSX. Even better again
